While LASIK is not for everybody, your surgeon can recommend a procedure better suited to your needs. Come have a consultation with us at Ellis Eye in San Jose, we can get you all the information needed to make this important decision. In the mean time, here is a quick overview of the risks and benefits involved with LASIK surgery.
What is it?
LASIK is a laser vision procedure that can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure reshapes the cornea, allowing light to enter the eye and properly focus onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision. The procedure is quick and effective, lasting only 15 minutes and showing results within 24 hours. Recovery is quick, making this procedure a first choice for people with busy, hectic and active lives.
Am I eligible?
The consultation will include a comprehensive eye examination to determine whether you are eligible for the procedure, and a recommended plan of action. After the full exam is complete, and if you are a candidate, you will be given the financial details for your consideration.
To be eligible for LASIK, there is qualifying criteria you must meet. If you do not meet the criteria you should NOT undergo the surgery. An ethical and experienced LASIK surgeon will not operate on a patient who is not an ideal LASIK candidate, so be cure to do your research on prospective surgeons.
To receive LASIK treatment, you must be at least 18 years old, have good overall health and stable vision. If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, or another eye injury/condition you should NOT undergo the procedure until your eyes are healthy and cleared by your doctor. You also are NOT eligible to receive LASIK treatment if you are nursing or pregnant.
The above list is not exhaustive, and your doctor may find other reasons why LASIK may not be a good idea for you.
What if I wear contacts?
If you wear contact lenses, you must abstain from wearing them for a certain period before undergoing LASIK. This will ensure that your prescription is correct and that your cornea is stable enough. The thickness of your cornea is important when determining candidacy, candidates must have a minimum corneal thickness of approximately 0.5 mm. For this reason, patients with keratoconus of other corneal thickness issues are not eligible for surgery.
What do I have to look forward to?
For those people are qualified for LASIK, there is much to look forward to. LASIK’s benefits speak for themselves. The procedure allows you to correct your vision permanently. Say goodbye to contacts, glasses and squinting to read street signs. At Ellis Eye in San Jose, we are here to answer your questions and help you take the next step towards better eye health.
