What is ZEISS SMILE?

ZEISS SMILE is a minimally invasive laser vision correction procedure used to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism in qualified patients. It uses a femtosecond laser to create a lenticule in your cornea.

The lenticule is about the size of a contact lens and is pulled out of the tiny incision created. Pulling the lenticule out through the incision makes ZEISS SMILE a minimally invasive procedure and corrects refractive errors.

What Can I Expect During ZEISS SMILE?

You’ll receive numbing eye drops before your ZEISS SMILE procedure at Ellis Eye begins. These drops ensure you won’t feel any pain at all during the procedure!

ZEISS SMILE is incredibly gentle and comfortable compared to other laser vision correction procedures. Your surgeon only needs to make an incision that’s about 4 millimeters in length, making the procedure minimally invasive and easier to recover from.

Once the numbing eye drops have a chance to disperse over the surface of your eye, the ZEISS SMILE procedure can start. Your surgeon will use an eyelid holder to keep your eye open before using a femtosecond laser to create a lenticule inside your cornea.

The lenticule is about the size and shape of a contact lens. Rather than creating a flap, which is typical with LASIK, creating a lenticule and removing it through the incision (which is about 4 millimeters or less) is what reshapes the cornea.

The cornea must be reshaped to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness and astigmatism. After removing the lenticule, the incision in your eye will not need stitches or sutures, as it will heal on its own.

Most patients start experiencing almost instant improvements to their vision, which will only improve in the days and weeks after ZEISS SMILE.

Am I a Good ZEISS SMILE Candidate?

Although ZEISS SMILE may sound like the vision correction procedure you’ve been waiting for, it’s not suitable for everyone. So, who is a good candidate for this procedure?

You may be a good ZEISS SMILE candidate if:

  • You’re at least 22 years old
  • You have a stable prescription that’s remained that way for a year or more
  • You’re in good health
  • You’re nearsighted, have astigmatism, or have both of these refractive errors
  • You have realistic expectations about what ZEISS SMILE could achieve if you undergo the procedure
  • You have healthy eyes without any preexisting conditions
  • You’ve been told you’re not a good candidate for other procedures like LASIK due to having thin corneas or dry eyes

ZEISS SMILE is often an excellent choice if you have thin corneas and aren’t a good candidate for procedures like LASIK. LASIK involves creating a flap in the cornea to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Creating a flap in the cornea requires removing some tissue from the cornea. However, if your corneas are too thin, undergoing a procedure like LASIK becomes unsafe.

Getting LASIK with thin corneas could harm your vision or cause other adverse effects. The good news is that even if you aren’t a good LASIK candidate, you may be better suited for a procedure like ZEISS SMILE.

ZEISS SMILE is different because a lenticule is made in the cornea rather than creating a flap. The incision to create the lenticule is significantly smaller, which causes much less disruption to the cornea and its nerves.

ZEISS SMILE is also often a much better choice if you have dry eyes and want better vision. Because it’s minimally invasive, ZEISS SMILE severs fewer nerves in the cornea, which means patients don’t have to worry about dry eyes.
